Great Home Remedies
The pomegranate comes from a larger shrub that prefers a warm and dry climate. It originated in Iran then spread throughout Asia and Mediterranean, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It can now be found growing throughout the warm regions of the world where it is cultivated for its juice. Pomegranate is derived from Latin from apple (pomum) and seeded (granatus) which give us a good idea of the fruits description. It is an apple sized fruit with thick red skin that contains many seeds. These seed are surrounded by pulp and range in color from white to red, they are edible since the fruit is technically a berry. Tradition holds that all pomegranates contain 365 seeds, however people who have actually decided to keep track of the seed count have found that the range is 300 to 1000, with bigger pomegranates having more seeds.
The polyphenols found in pomegranate juice help remove harmful free radicals from the cells of the body which helps maintain the cell's function. These polyphenols also help strengthen the immune system, aid in wound repair and have a decided anti-inflammatory affect. Pomegranates polyphenols also have been touted as being effective at slowing skin wrinkling making the fruit a popular addition to both homemade and over the counter anti aging treatments.
Another recent discovery shows that pomegranates can help slow the deterioration of cartilage, which can help prevent osteoarthritis. A recent study in which patients drank 8oz of the juice once a day for three months found pomegranate is also good for increasing blood flow to the heart making it beneficial for those suffering from ischemic heart disease. Arterial plaque buildup was also reduced in the test subjects.
Due to pomegranates rise to popularity for its health related benefits, commercial supplements available is concentrated or capsule form are now available for the public. These supplements give you all the health benefits of the pomegranate without all the sugar and calories.
So, apparently all the buzz about the pomegranate is not just hype and eating the fruit, drinking the juice or taking the supplement could help improve your overall health.
